What are the biggest growth levers for scaleups?

What's the biggest growth lever for scaleups? When I speak with founders & CEOs, it tends to be at least one of the following:
A Sharpened Brand Positioning
“Our product is good… but people don’t get it.”
Is there clear space in the market you can own? Are you stuck in the noise?
How strong is your proposition: is it short, clear, and ownable?
Do you have reasons to believe that back it up (proof points, data, traction)?
Is the journey frictionless: awareness → consideration → purchase → investor buy-in?
When positioning is right, both customers and investors feel clarity. And clarity = confidence.
Marketing that Drives Sales
“Do we need a senior marketing hire? Or just better strategy?”
Look at your sales funnel: where’s the weak link? Awareness, conversion, retention?
Be honest about your brand vs performance marketing split. Are you over-indexed on short-term ads and under-invested in building brand equity?
Run A/B tests on your biggest levers (ads, landing pages, offers).
Are you learning fast enough? Or just running campaigns without iteration?
The goal isn’t “more marketing”, it’s smarter marketing that compounds over time.
Investor Readiness
“We know we’re onto something… but our deck feels a bit flat, and pitching is stressful.”
Start with the investor’s POV. What metrics, story, and vision will make them take notice? Often it’s about the narrative as much as the numbers.
Other themes I hear a lot
Founders are experimenting with AI tools but are unsure how to join the dots strategically.
Balancing proven marketing channels with taking a risk on new ones.
Realising that energy and clarity at the top flows down to execution.
At OSER, this is the work I love most, helping scaleups find the thing that will actually move the needle, whether it’s brand, marketing or investor storytelling.
So, if you’re scaling right now: which of these feels most like the world you're in?
